Mr Mikes Steakhouse & Bar
130 Sierra Springs Dr., Airdrie
Burger: Classic Mikeburger ($10.99). A flame-grilled patty served on a toasted French loaf with garlic, topped with Mikes' special sauce and cheddar cheese. There was a slice of pickle speared on top of the bun, so I added it into my burger.
Sides: Fries.
Atmosphere: A family-friendly steak house that is fairly generic in design, but with a West Coast flare.
Menu: Not surprisingly, the menu is decidedly beef-centric. In addition to the burgers there are steak sandwiches, a beef dip and steaks. Rounding out the menu are appetizers, seafood and chicken alternatives.
Decision: I've mentioned before that I'm an advocate for simple burgers — let the ingredients speak for themselves. Unfortunately, I wasn't completely sold on the story the Mikeburger ingredients told me. The French loaf and oblong-shaped patty were novel ideas, but I wasn't keen on the patty, which was spongy and, I suspect, pre-formed.
In retrospect, I should have gone with the Avalanche burger (two patties, cheddar, mushrooms, bacon, lettuce, tomato and onion). The extra toppings might have helped improve this burger's narrative.
