Burger Hunt
1410 World Bier Haus
Burger: Montreal blue burger ($13; $11 on Fridays). An all-beef patty crusted with Montreal steak spice topped with blue cheese, mushrooms, mayo, lettuce, tomato, red onion and pickle, all on a toasted kaiser.
Sides: Soup, mashed potatoes, rice, salad, fries or coleslaw. We were advised to pick any two, yet only one of our choices arrived. I couldn't be bothered to inquire or complain.
Atmosphere: The decor left no lasting impression beyond all the draft taps, but I think that’s what they're going for. The place was littered with TVs.
Menu: All beers on tap are available in 5-oz tasters, a good idea given the sheer number of options. The beer menu comes in its own binder and is greater in scope than the food menu. There are fairly standard appetizers, dim sum, soups and salads, sandwiches, flatbread pizzas, pastas and a few entrées.
Decision: While looking online, I noticed that 1410's Friday special was a "gourmet burger bar." While I wasn't exactly sure what that meant, I was immediately excited. I dreamt that it involved ordering your patty and having the opportunity to top the burger with whatever you'd like from a selection of fresh toppings — two pieces of cheese and nine strips of bacon, um, yes please. The burger bar is your domain! As it turned out, all it meant was that the four burgers on the menu are $11 on Fridays.
I opted for the blue burger because, well, blue cheese seemed like a good idea. As it turned out, the cheese added just enough sharpness without overpowering the rest of the burger. The mushrooms, unfortunately, were lost in the mix. Texturally I knew they were there, but there was no flavour. Even though it wasn't what I had envisioned in my crazy burger dream world, this was a decent pub burger.
