Express Submarine & Café
125 7 Ave. S.W.
Burger: Cheeseburger with fries ($4, tax included). A plain bun with mayo, ketchup and lettuce, cheese and a hand-formed patty.
Sides: Fries.
Atmosphere: To be honest, Express Submarine & Cafe isn't in the best part of town. An informal poll revealed that many people know it as "Crack Burger." And while it's a little rough inside (a crooked table was balanced nicely by a mitten) and it could certainly use a good scrubbing, the place was relatively clean.
Menu: Daily specials range from $5 to $6. There are burgers, subs, Chinese specials and "garlic poutine." Food is served fast, whether it's to stay or go.
Decision: Kevin, a regular Burger Hunt reader, basically challenged me to do this one. He didn’t have the nerve to check it out himself, so as far as I was concerned, I had no option but to go and try it for myself. The patty was approximately eight ounces, but not all of it was beef. Whatever was used for filler wasn’t offensive and even added considerable moisture, but not any extra flavour. The fries get a positive nod for being cut in-house, but, unfortunately, they were the greasiest fries I've ever had. There was about a tablespoon of grease in the bottom of my to-go container that also coated the bottom of my bun. Will I ever go back? Probably not, but I can say for certain that this is not the worst burger in Calgary.
Next Up: The other end of the culinary spectrum, Rush Restaurant.
