Cattle Baron North
3340 26 St. N.E.
Burger: Bull's Eye Burger ($12). A generous patty topped with Bull's Eye barbecue sauce, cheddar cheese, leafy lettuce, thick cut chilled tomato, a comparable slice of red onion and a sliver of dill pickle — all on a toasted, cornmeal-dusted bun.
Sides: Fries or salad.
Atmosphere: Think Alberta steakhouse and you're pretty much there. I chose to sit on the lounge side after I was told it offers the same menu. Decked out in western decor, you can choose comfortable booths or bucket chairs.
Menu: A straight-forward steakhouse. The farthest the menu strays from meat choices is the seafood linguine or chicken stir-fry.
Decision: Having had mixed luck with steakhouse burgers, I'm happy to report that this was a fairly successful venture. The patty was about one cm wider than the bun on all sides and, for the first time in recent memory, pieces of beef fell onto my plate rather than extraneous vegetables or sauces. A nice char on the burger added some depth. If I find myself at Cattle Baron again, however, I think the burger would be better without the barbecue sauce. My second suggestion is that the onion shouldn’t be so thick. This burger was decent, but not spectacular.
