Burger Hunt - Dell Cafe

Dell Café

Find It...

28-7930 Bowness Rd. N.W.

Burger: Bacon cheeseburger ($9.75 after an upgrade to poutine). A toasted plain bun with mustard, bacon, melted cheese, a generous hand-formed patty, tomato, diced onion, chopped lettuce, mayo and relish.

Sides: Fries, onion rings, poutine (shredded cheddar, not curds) or soup.

Atmosphere: Located in a strip mall in Bowness, this place could easily be overlooked, but the Dell Café was packed with locals on the Tuesday night I visited. There are a few custom Dell-Café-themed pieces of artwork on the wall, as well as some black-and-white photos. The pi èce de résistance, however, is an inflatable deer head mounted on the wall. I need one.

Menu: A combo of classic diner offerings as well as decent Chinese-Canadian options are featured. You can order everything from all-day breakfast to Denver sandwiches, liver and onions, club sandwiches, wor wonton soup and daily Chinese specials.

Decision: This was a diner burger as it should be: simple, tasty, beefy, yummy. For under $10, it was money well-spent. The produce was fresh, as was the bun, and the patty had a great crispy seared flavour. This was one of those times when, as I took my last bite, I wished I was hungry enough for another burger, or could be instantly transported back to the beginning of the meal so that I could enjoy it all over again.

Next up: Altadore Dining Lounge, 4824, 16th St. S.W.

The Dell Cafe reminds me of the small city where I grew up and also of a number of cafes I have eaten in while traveling through small towns. It's great, nostalgic, home cooking and the fact that it is always packed proves that it is something people want from time to time!
