Burger: Prime rib beef burger ($11.99). A grilled 8-oz. prime rib patty, served on a toasted sesame seed Kaiser bun with lettuce, tomato, pickle, onion and a house bourbon mayo. Add cheddar, bacon, sautéed mushrooms or onions for $1.50.
Sides: Mixed greens, soup or fries are included. Upgrade to caesar salad or sweet potato fries for $1.50.
Atmosphere: An open lounge inside the casino, with lots of TVs that offer off-track betting. It’s a fairly plain room with some sports memorabilia added for a “sports lounge” feel.
Menu: The lounge menu also features a New Orleans Saints cheeseburger made from a blackened Cajun patty topped with cheddar cheese, candied bacon, Creole mayo and the same toppings as my selected burger. The balance of the menu offers standard fare such as salads, appetizers, gumbo, sandwiches and daily specials.
Decision: My buddy tried the Saints burger and my stomach still turns thinking about the pool of grease that was left on his plate. The Saints burger was listed as one of the top five burgers in Calgary, according to The Fan 960’s best burger challenge. I guarantee that neither of the Elbow River Casino’s burgers will even crack my Top 12.
My prime rib patty was spongy, rubbery — a real disappointment — and the burger, as a whole, was overly salty. There wasn’t enough bourbon mayo to enhance the burger. The only redeeming factor was the sheer size of it, which was generous.
Next up: Darell is hoping for a religious experience at the Holy Grill. 827 10 Ave. S.W.
