Burger Hunt - Loungeburger

Loungeburger

Burger: $40 Lounger – A Kobe Wagyu beef patty topped with prosciutto-wrapped lobster, butter lettuce, tomato, chives and a truffle Hollandaise sauce — all on a pretzel bun ($40).

Sides: There are eight types of fries to pick from as well as salads, onion shards and rings or soup.

Atmosphere: A brand-spanking-new place that’s fancy without feeling stuffy. The lounge side is decked out with a ton of TVs. Diner or café, Loungeburger is not. Burger Mecca? It might be.

Menu: Loungeburger features 15 of its own burger creations as well as a build-your-own menu with 14 choices of patties (including game, seafood and veggie options), six types of buns, 19 vegetables, eight types of cheese, eight additional meat toppings and 23 sauce selections. You could go back day-after-day for months — possibly years — and not even come close to exhausting your options. P.S. Get the dessert burger; it’s visually stunning and tasty.

Decision: I have to admit that I was skeptical about whether or not a $40 burger could possibly live up to its price tag. In the end, it was a wonderful meal and pure decadence, to say the least. The patty was melt-in-your-mouth good, as Wagyu should be. The prosciutto was sliced thin enough that there was no stringiness as it pulled apart, accompanying two decent-sized portions of lobster. The Hollandaise was rich and tasty, but a little sticky and messy — my only complaint. The pretzel bun that held things together was dense without being chewy.

So was it worth $40? Probably not. Is it Calgary’s best burger? In its price range, most likely. There’s simply no way a $40 burger will ever find its way into my weekly meal plans. Plain and simple, this is a celebration burger, built for those special occasions when splurging is in order.

As an aside, I made a second trip to Loungeburger to try the organic Butters beef burger with butter lettuce, mayo, tomato and cheddar cheese ($10). It was fantastic, affirming my belief that you don’t need to spend $40 to get a decent burger.

I might have to try that. Not an everyweek thing like you said, but a once in a while treat, definitely.
