Burger Hunt - Buchanan's Chop House

Buchanan's Chop House Whisky Bar

Burger: Buchanan's famous deluxe charbroiled bacon cheeseburger ($19.00). Topped with fresh lettuce, a tomato slice, red onions, a dill pickle slice and a house-made secret burger sauce.

Sides: Fries and coleslaw. The fries were good, but the portion was a little skimpy, especially for $19.

Atmosphere: A comfortable room decorated with vintage sports and movie memorabilia. The lounge is an even more comfortable extension of the dining room.

Menu: Steak and chops are at the forefront of the menu, but chicken and fish options are also available. The menu also sports the “Soon to be famous veggie burger” and a blackened hot and spicy jalapeño jack cheese burger, which I also really, really wanted to try and will most likely come back to at some point.

Decision: As I continue this quest, I’m learning that there are many, many types of burgers. A recent comment on the Fast Forward Weekly website in regards to my review of Mercury said, “For $16 I'd want to have my d**k sucked while I ate it. That's highway robbery unless there's truffles or Kobe involved.” While the phrasing is a little crass, I do partially agree. But, in the end, when you factor in things like the type of meat offered — 100 per cent AAA Alberta sirloin — and the overall quality of ingredients, I think there is room in this world for burgers over $12.

Buchanan’s sirloin burger was cooked to order, medium well, and was rich with flavour. It was one of the biggest — or rather tallest — burgers to date. This is a jaw-opener for sure. The secret burger sauce, a combo of mayo, mustard, ketchup and other ingredients I suspect, came on the side and also worked well as a fry dip. The fresh bun was dwarfed by the size of the patty, but still managed to hold things together. It was a really good burger, but at this point in my life, I simply can’t afford $19 burgers quite as often as I’d like. Luckily there are tons of cheaper, viable options around.

Next up: Darell goes looking for cheaper burger deliciousness at Burger Inn, with several locations in the city.

fang: Have not been yet. What's even funnier is that the blogger references the Calgary Herald article that was inspired by my chowhound.com thread that's about this ongoing series! Six degrees or something...

calgaryhumper: I will also be visiting Giant Burger. With a name like that, how could I not?
