Burger Hunt - Inglewood Drive-In

Inglewood Drive-In

Burger: The Gourmet Burger, an 8 oz. homemade patty with bacon, lettuce, tomato, mayo and cheese ($4.99).

Sides: Fries, curly fries, onion rings, poutine and soup of the day. Also, 12 flavours of milkshakes.

Atmosphere: A mom-and-pop-style shop with a miniature drive-thru. Seating for less than 20.

Menu: The menu has literally been pieced together with bits of paper and tape used to adjust prices and cover over items no longer offered. But the staples remain. Breakfast (served until 11 a.m.) includes options like two eggs with meat, omelettes, pancakes or French toast. Grilled cheese and western sandwiches appear for lunch and there are daily dinner specials like hot turkey, beef or pork or veal cutlets.

Decision: I had never been to Inglewood Drive-In before, but had always been intrigued when passing by. There seems to be a constant flow of traffic. Sometimes, it’s the little mom-and-pop places that offer the best food. Unfortunately though, that’s not the case here. The description of the gourmet burger had me quite excited, but as I took my first bite, all hopes were dashed. If ground beef is supposed to be cooked to an internal temperature of 165 F, then I’m guessing mine was cooked to about 210 F. It had a creepy crunch to it, kind of like the breading on a McChicken. The rest of the burger was forgettable, as well. I’ll give them kudos in service though — at 11:47, three-quarters of an hour after breakfast had finished, they offered to cook some up for a group of four.

Next up: A burger yet to be named
