Burger: The Unicorn Burger. Toasted bun, an 8 oz. beef patty topped with Alberta smoked Gouda, Big Rock Grasshopper onion relish, as well as red onions, pickle, tomato, lettuce and mayo ($13.95).
Sides: Your choice of fries, soup of the day, mixed greens or Caesar salad.
Atmosphere: Located in a basement off of Stephen Avenue, The Unicorn seems like a typical pub at first glance. But after perusing the menu, I discover that it is “Calgary’s first authentic pub” (whatever that means). Opened in 1979, it was originally owned by the Irish Rovers and named after the hit diddy and album The Unicorn. Neat!
Menu: Standard pub grub. ’Nuff said.
Decision: An average burger. I have the feeling when I look back at my list in a few months, this one will get lost in the mix. On paper, the smoked Gouda and onion relish sounded a lot fancier and exciting than they turned out to be. There are no major complaints, the size is generous and all of the ingredients work well together. There just isn’t enough for praise.
Next week’s hunt will take Darell to Crush, 1312 12 Ave. S.W., to sample the Crush Grilled Burger.
