Burger: The Burger (that’s actually the name) ($14) – Toasted sesame-seed bun, aged cheddar cheese, cured bacon, sautéed mushrooms, red pepper relish, Dijon mustard and a real beef patty.
Sides: Served with sea-salted fries. Swap it for a Caesar salad, seasonal greens or yam fries for an additional $1.50.
Atmosphere: Wanna-be-upscale-yet-really-still-casual dining.
Menu: Renowned Canadian chef Rob Feenie is a “food concept architect” for Cactus Club, and the burger is listed on the menu as one of his signature dishes. Other items on the menu with his signature include a short rib sandwich and a barbecue duck clubhouse. Cactus Club does a good job of serving familiar food, but adding their own twists.
Decision: My meal started off with the mini-burger appetizers, which were extraordinary. Very close in concept to the full-sized burger, I quickly scarfed down all three. It’s not too often you have the option of enjoying pre-burger burgers. It just seemed like the right thing to do.
This was the 10th burger I’ve had on this quest. I’m willing to give it the nod as the best restaurant chain burger (not hamburger chain) thus far, beating Humpty’s and Moxie’s. The red pepper relish was a winning touch, but the mushrooms were the real gem —thinly sliced and piled on thick, they added earthiness to the total package.
Next week’s Burger Hunt will test Best of Calgary winner Peters’ Drive-In.
