Find It...
Burger: Classic Alberta beef burger with Canadian bacon and white cheddar cheese ($11.95). Bottom to top: toasted sesame and poppy seed bun, a mayonnaise-based sauce kicked up with red pepper jelly, lettuce, slices of red onions, tomatoes, the patty, Canadian bacon, cheese and the top bun. Note that the produce was under the patty. This is the first burger in the hunt to place the produce on the bottom. I like my produce on top of the burger. I know, I know, you can just turn it upside down, but that would mean the bacon and cheese would then be on the bottom. Alterations would be messy.
Sides: Roasted potato wedges, soup, baked beans, spinach greens or mixed greens.
Atmosphere: While diner appears in the name, Diner Deluxe feels more like a retro kitchen to me. They’ve done an amazing job of replicating an old-school feel and creating a welcoming environment.
Menu: Breakfast served all day, diner fare served after 11 a.m. The diner fare features classics such as meatloaf, lamb shanks, pork chops and mac’n’cheese with sundried tomatoes, basil pesto and white cheddar cheese. There is also a kids menu. Breakfast and brunch offer all the standard fare, and bonus options like grilled grapefruit with rosemary syrup or Johnnycakes.
Decision: I had never been to Diner Deluxe for anything but breakfast or brunch, which they do really well. I think I’ll be sticking to that pattern. Once again, even though I enjoyed the burger, I simply can’t get past the pre-formed patty.
Dear restaurants:
Please take the time to make your own patties. It matters.
Love,

I used to work at Diner Deluxe and I can shed a little light on why they use pre-formed patties. It has to do with the tiny kitchen.
In order to deal with ground beef safely, especially in the kind of volume that a busy restaurant like DD would require, there needs to be space enough in the kitchen that the meat can be 'worked' far from all other food items. This is, of course, to protect against the possible contamination from the raw meat. DD's kitchen is tiny and simply too small for this. Take a peek through the pass-through next time you, well, pass through.
Certainly the Ennest's are not about cutting corners. Alberta once told me that they have to have an extra prep cook on staff every day just to cube potatoes and yams into hashbrowns. Everything else, even their jam, is made in-house. And if they had the space, so would the burgers.
