Burger Hunt

Fatburger Kingburger

Burger: The 1/2 lb Kingburger with cheese and a fried egg ($17.96 for a combo with onion rings and vanilla shake). All Fatburgers come with your choice of standard toppings: mustard, relish, onions, pickles, tomato, lettuce and mayo. You can also choose bacon, fried eggs, chili, mushrooms or cheese at an additional cost.

Sides: Homemade onion rings, chili in a cup, skinny fries, chili cheese fries, as well as milkshakes in chocolate, vanilla, strawberry or the current feature flavour. Word on the street is that banana will be the upcoming feature flavour (at the 32 Avenue N.E. location, at least).

Atmosphere: An old-school diner that’s flush with bright reds and yellows. It makes me imagine a drive-thru, or waitresses on rollerskates bringing the food to your vehicle.

Menu: Burgers are the focus, but they also offer salads, chicken sandwiches (Americans don’t use chicken burger like us Canucks), turkey and veggie burgers.

Decision: This was the best burger to date. It’s a little pricey, but you can dump the sides if you’re looking to save a few bucks. The meat tasted like beef (unfortunately rare these days), which makes sense — Fatburger serves only fresh AAA Alberta beef north of the border. The produce was nice and chilled. The fried egg was there mostly for novelty (and to piss off my doctor), and while it wasn’t bad, it didn’t add much to the burger.

Why don't you try a non-chain Canadian burger? Your choices so far have been crap.

pianoboy,

I agree that I'd like to see the author try something more unique. In the first article of his series the author posted their email address and asked for recommendations.

I recommended he try Boogies Burgers - dunno if they received it or not.

What would you recommend?

You're right, that wasn't a very constructive comment on my part.

I'm personally a die hard Peters fan. Here's a few others that I've tried and liked, or would like to try:

Rocky's Burger Bus
CB Drive Inn (Northmount)
Inglewood Drive In
Burger Inn (17th)
Buzzards

Cheers.

I should also mention that another of my favorite three burgers is from the Dairy Lane in West Hillhurst ( http://www.ffwdweekly.com/venue/dairy-lane-cafe/155/ & http://www.dairylanecafe.ca/ )

The Salt Lik has pretty decent burger too - probably close to the top of my list.

Darell's evil editor (me) told him he couldn't tell you where he's going. You'll just have to keep on reading. He did send me his hit list and it's looking good. Nice mix 'o venues coming up.

The best burger in town comes straight from my BBQ! Side salad (potato or veggie) the cost is a fraction and I know who's touched my meat!!!

No chance for a sneak peak of the list? Maybe you could even post the the name of the next place that will be reviewed within each review?

That way you're just letting us know a week before hand. Those of us who are interested could visit the establishment ourselves and make up our own minds before we read the review - then we could contribute the review without having a preconceived notion that would be instilled by reading the review _before_ going to try the burger.

OK, you crazy burger lovers. Fang, you're right.

On Thursday, Darell's Burger Hunt will be about Kane's Harley Diner in Inglewood (1209 9 Ave SE, 403-269-7311). He tried the Springer Burger. Enjoy. Let's see how everyone feels.

Myself, or Darell, will keep you updated a week in advance of where the hunt will go.
