Yellow leaves are starting to hit the ground and that can only mean one thing: pulling out the boots and winter jackets. But dressing for cooler weather doesn’t mean you have to look like you’re heading to Fort McMurray to dig trenches. In fact, some people prefer fall fashions to all other seasons, opting for a sleek pair of boots over flip-flops, and sexy leather jackets over skimpy tank tops.
Fashion and lifestyle consultant Jason Krell says this fall and winter season will bring in a change of colour — and he’s not just talking about the trees.
“Last fall was all about layering greys,” Krell says, “but this year is about layering blacks and layering browns.”
For suit guys, Krell says tweeds are coming back, as well as double-breasted and three-piece suits.
“Think Mad Men retro.”
Another popular fall trend will be chunky knit sweaters with a punch of colour in a scarf, he adds.
Jacqueline Tyler, a local fashion and beauty professional, believes women will be wearing maxi (floor-length) dresses, coats and sweaters.
“They will look good tied with high-waisted belts,” Tyler says. “Layering bracelets and colour blocking will be popular this season as well.”
Both Krell and Tyler say the one of the most popular trends of the fall season is military anything.
“Military double-breasted, high-collared jackets, military boots worn raw with socks over leggings and chunky rubber boots,” Tyler says adding that leather bomber jackets continue to be hot.
Krell believes the guys will be tucking their pants into their Doc Martin or military boots.
“A slim pant would work best,” he adds.
One thing Tyler doesn’t want to see any more of, though, is feather earrings and tights as pants.
“I hope those fade.” We talked to Calgarians to see what they are wearing and the selection is as diverse as the Calgary seasons. Here is what we found.
