Best of Calgary 2010 Winners

You pick 'em, we print 'em

Fast Forward Weekly readers have once again voted for the Best of Calgary’s food joint, clothing store, DJ night, vinyl shop and hundreds more. And to balance it off, readers weighed in on some of the city’s worst — worst C-train stop and construction zone.

There are some familiar faces and spots — Chad Saunders (favourite radio personality) and The Ship & Anchor (sexiest clientele) — and then there’s the eye-openers: skinny jeans (worst new trend) and Mayor Dave Bronconnier (hardest working Calgarian and best local villain).

Read on to see what the people have chosen. See if it’s who and what you had selected.

...well done , a bit of fun and amusement....BUT, basically the survey is floored from the start because you included a set of options to choose from in the Q and A list. Who came up with this set of options and what criterion was this based on... FFW advertisers and friends? maybe or maybe not.... I don't know. what we do know is that people will more likely choose from a list of "options provided" rather than think beyond them. sure its intended as a light and fun thing and it is this , but to have any real usefulness, and to be really informative, there should be some basic information , like who chose the options, how were they chosen, how many votes went to each 1,2,3, what came in as(say) 4, 5, and 6 for each category ... this would be far more interesting information in my opinion. but kudos for having a go.

Prince's Island Park is hardly a secret considering the amount of events that happen there, Jett Thunders isn't a real person, Nellie's is by far the worst place for breakfast because of their terrible health and safety record and Russell Sporting Goods went out of business last year. Worst best list ever.

This should really become a "once every 2 or 3 years" "best of". Give your readers a chance to experience a few options outside their bubble of 17th ave and Kensington. I mean really...the same things win every year regardless as to whether or not they are still around.

I completely agree with brushy... this seems like a FFW advertisers and friends list.

still some places I haven't checked out yet, so thanks for the work of compiling this list!

nd the 2nd place for vintage clothing, The Cat's Eye, may be out of business or possibly moved. the last time I passed by it was gone.

Short lists are generated without influence of advertising or "friends." Our writers and editors provide suggestions, and there are always obvious short list candidates. Last year's 1st and 2nd place winners automatically make the short list (when there is a short list). All categories have a space for write-in answers. If Russell wins after closing, that's the way she goes — people voted for them! Heck, Dave Kelly came in third for TV personality, and he's not on air anymore.

For the record, there are a plethora of winners who have never spent a cent with Fast Forward, and lots of our regular advertisers didn't win a thing.

Cat's Eye moved to 10th Ave S.W.

Brushy, good suggestion about printing number/percentage of votes. I've struggled with that, and logistically it's nearly impossible to do in the amount of time we have, but I'll think about it for next year.

I had a lot of fun adding my two cents into this survey. I do however find a lack of research for the businesses listed. If they have been closed for a year or more, why are they listed? So many small new businesses in the uptown area would die to have their name in this! I like the section in the bar area for best new bar, maybe this could be applied to other categories like restaurants, hair salons, lingerie stores etc. it would be so beneficial for new businesses to have their name listed instead of the bigger ones that have been around for years!

This might be admissable for newbs, not so much for anybody who actually gets around in this city. Just like FFWD has become a fluffer for local wannabe talent. Scared to have a ballot for best free periodical?

Brushy knows what time it is! No prompts, just an empty ballot. The top five, with voter percentages could actually validate this. Do the 300 vinyhilists that live in this city constitute a vote?

Voters need to venture beyond the downtown core. Best Vietnamese restaurants listed are garbage. Real Good Vietnamese restaurants are located on 17th ave SE and forest lawn. Don't be afraid of the 'ghetto'. If you go to an ethnic restaurant, make sure there are people of that ethnicity there!

Suggestion for appeasing the likes of cacroach: There are so many awards for dining out and nightlife, and unfortunately this is a huge sprawling city. Rather than letting the Ship & Anchor clean sweep everything, have an inner-city vote and a suburban vote.

As an advocate for inner-city living, I would say who cares if voters are concentrated downtown? Maybe thats because that is where the best places are, It's not like it's where all the people live (seeing how only 33,000 of 1 million live downtown and the beltline area). It's not that people are afraid of the 'ghetto', it's that they appreciate places that are great AND not in the ghetto.

I realize I'm a little late on comments, but I'm in agreement with most of these. Having been reading this since it's inception, I couldn't help but roll my eyes and utter WTF? repeatedly. The multiple choice aspect most certainly influences the vote, and on that basis I do agree that next year it would be most interesting and least biased to simply leave it blank. While I am aware of the extra work this would create for FFW staff in tallying votes, a good programmer may be able to help create something to ease the process. I also think that a little extra campaigning might help. These are lazy voters. I fully agree that the Vietnamese category, in particular, earned a WTF?!? from me. But, if I was sitting on the patio at the ship filling this in on my iphone after a few pints, I might answer the same way...
There are also some categories that could easily be removed as they constitute a list of 3 out of 4 or 5 available options. Best festival for example, or best local tv station... dropping one or two off the list hardly counts as "best of", more like "some examples of".
While I'm at it, why not make things more specific, and therefore more interesting and informative. I always find myself asking "best of" how, or in what context? Usually "most well known", or "most frequented" (or "the only ones I can think of") is the better description. So, like you do in the bar/restaurant categories, how about things like "best pedicure under $50.00", or "wine shop with the best selection", and "Liquor store with the best deals"? Best band... how about "sexiest band", or "best band to see on a first date", or "surliest band"? Now THAT would be fun, wouldn't it?
I agree that this is a good introduction to what's available (note I said "what's available", not "best of", do you really want the new Vancouver ex-pat Calgary hater to go to Oriental Pheonix for their first taste of Vietnamese, thinking that's the best we have to offer?) in the 'hood for newcomers, but for the rest of us - for me - this has become excruciating. Switch it up somehow next year man!

Twisted Element is the worst place on earth, just because its the only official gay bar in the city doesn't mean it should win the "best" in the category. next year can you also include the option: does not exist?

also, maybe a category for best radio program would be neat. (with a fill in the blank of course)

and I would agree on the advertising for the best of categories. and I don't just mean on FFWD's part. businesses should be actively advertising that they want to be voted for best in Calgary so more people who frequent locations not located in the downtown core would be more inclined to vote.
