Starry, starry night

From the biggest museum to unlikely lounges

Stella Mere at Glenbow

Lethbridge artist Catherine Ross took three years to cast 750 starfish in aluminum for her massive installation Stella Mere. The sculpture sprawls across the floor, with each starfish individually mounted on steel rods at various levels, creating an undulating wave of silver.

Ross donated the work to the Glenbow in 2008, so there is plenty of time to check it out after Glenbow staff worked for days installing the piece.

Will Yee at Concept Lounge and Eatery

More and more often in Calgary, interesting work is being shown in unlikely locations. The music-and-booze-filled Marquee Room, the espresso-charged Weeds Cafe, the delicious Cafe Koi and, in this case, the muted contemporary space of Concept Lounge.

Will Yee’s featured acrylic works are bright and colourful with a strong illustrative style influenced by clichés, myths and stereotypes.

Gnarled hands, fantastical beasts and psychedelic florals grace canvasses that are hard to miss, even if you’re just going for a drink or a bite to eat.
