A pioneer in feminist film, video and live performance works, Carolee Schneemann is nothing short of a living performative art legend. She has put her body at the forefront of contemporary art dialogues about sexuality, gender and the erotic for five decades, and Calgarians will finally have a chance to hear her speak on Friday, February 1 at the Alberta College of Art and Design (ACAD). Among the artist’s most widely known works, Meat Joy and Interior Scroll, are hallmarks of radical performance for their outrageous depictions of women’s bodies, sexualities, anatomy and mortality, but Schneemann has asserted her commitment to these issues throughout her lifelong practice. Credited for launching feminist dialogues within various art movements from Fluxus to experimental film, her lecture promises to elucidate on her work and the groundbreaking ideas that have shaped her career.
