So, like, awesome

Who doesn’t love comic books? Maybe you don’t read them like you used to as a kid, maybe you never got into them at all, but there’s something appealing about the rich colours and even more colourful stories. They are often about superheroes and their dual personalities, struggling against evil and trying to find their place in the world.

Centre Stage Theatre is bringing back The Astonishing Adventures of Awesome Girl and Radical Boy, a hit play from Lunchbox Theatre’s 2008 season, written by Ethan Cole.

If the title and the comic book esthetic isn’t enough to get you interested, consider the facts. This play won the Betty Mitchell Award for outstanding new play in 2008 and it’s directed by Downstage’s Simon Mallet, who was nominated for this year’s Betty for best direction.

The story follows Nick, a comic book author by day. By night, he’s Radical Boy, armed with a golden javelin, fighting the good fight.

When the stunning Julia, whose alter ego is Awesome Girl, enters his life, everything changes.

Although the play is partly based on a fantasy world of comic book heroes, the struggles of the characters and the world in which they live is firmly grounded in the real world. It’s family friendly, at least if your not-so-little one is 12 years old and up.

The Astonishing Adventures of Awesome Girl and Radical Boy runs until October 16 at Motel in the Epcor Centre.
