The latest offering from Dancers’ Studio West, Fly, explores the heights of creativity with two exceptionally diverse approaches to dance, with the work of Helen Husak and emerging Montreal company 4EverFresH (Julia Gutsik and Raul Guevera). “Audiences will experience a stimulating evening of two extreme styles of dance,” says artistic director Brian Hansen. Husak and Gutsik were both invited by Hansen to complete residencies with DSW as their complementary forms of dance are contemporary yet divergent.
Husak is well-known to many fans of Calgary dance, performing across Canada and having trained with the most accomplished choreographers in the country. It is her considered artistic voice that marks her work as unique, along with her personal insights and unusual props. For Husak, creating a movement for the audience is all about unfolding an experience that allows people to relate to the character portrayed.
Gutsik has been collaborating for four years with Guevera under the name 4EverFresH. The style that they have produced combines hip hop culture with a more grounded, contemporary dance background and the result is unique, high energy and, above all, cutting-edge.
Fly runs October 25 to 27 at Dancers’ Studio West.
