For dance fans looking for something new and different, Eko Dance Projects’ first performance of the season, Just Po Prostu, brings a dramatic blend of talent from Poland and Calgary to Dancers’ Studio West.
This most recent performance is a significant affair for Eko Dance Projects, as it marks the first season under its new creative leadership. Accepting the torch passed by Erin O’Connor in June, Melissa Monteros and Wojciech Mochniej became the artistic directors for the company, though their names will already be familiar to many on the dance circuit. The pair has been collaborating since 1991 and co-founded W & M Physical Theatre in 1994 in Poland. Mochniej is often an invited guest artist of the University of Calgary’s dance program, where Monteros is an associate professor.
Just Po Prostu (Just Because) is the latest dance theatre piece choreographed by Mochniej, and debuted in Poland earlier this month at the International Festival of Dance. An international ensemble cast has been assembled for the work. Canadians Lisa Hering and Saxon Fraser, bringing with them strong backgrounds in ballet and hip hop respectively, will join Basia Czajkowska, formerly of the Polish Dance Theatre, Wojciech Kapron from the Lublin Dance Theatre and Mochniej himself for three nights onstage in Calgary.
Just Po Prostu (Just Because) runs November 28, 29 and December 1 at Dancers’ Studio West. For more information and tickets, call 244-0950.
