Accomplished Canadian comedy and TV star Roman Danylo prefers to dabble. “In terms of the comedy world, I have always been a jack of all trades,” he says. “I have never just done standup or sketch comedy. I have always done it all.”

Many have come to know Danylo by watching him on the CTV comedy series Comedy Inc. His diverse arsenal of comedic weapons will be on display in Calgary over two nights, as he launches his new live tour.

Danylo could have started the tour out East, or he could have kicked off the tour in Vancouver, where he currently resides, but instead he says, “We’re kicking it off in Calgary because that’s my hometown. It’s where I’m originally from, so it seems like the best place. And we’re doing it at the Loose Moose, the place where I got my start doing comedy way back when.

“This show is kind of a ‘best-of’ for me,” he adds. “It’s like 15 years in the making, covering the time I have been in this business.” The dynamic performer will not only be trotting out some of the best standup bits he’s developed over the years, but some sketch material and some of his more popular Comedy Inc. characters. The show also features a sizable unscripted, improv component. “I really like to do interactive stuff, where I crawl into the audience and bring some poor unsuspecting person out of the crowd to be part of the show.”

The high-energy funnyman is changing things up from city to city by pairing up with a different improv performer in each market. “In Calgary, I am using a former improv partner of mine who’s also a very close friend and a former roommate, Ray Gurrie,” says Danylo. “What’s great about Ray is because he’s such an old friend, he doesn’t respect me in any fashion, so I never know what’s he’s going to do onstage.” Danylo says his many TV and film credits don’t mean much to Gurrie, a seven-time world improv champion. “To him, I’m still the guy who didn’t wash the dishes,” he says.

Wrapping things up each evening is an all-out improv jam in which Danylo and a special guest improv partner from each tour city will invite individuals and theatre troupes to join them onstage. Danylo is relying on the jam concept to wrap up each of his upcoming tour dates with what he calls, “A bit of large-scale chaos.”
