Vehicle launch

Local upstart mag has plenty to celebrate

Alberta produces hundreds of magazines, running the gamut from Canine Review to Alberta Views. Three Alberta College of Art and Design students have stepped into this fray with a glossy, good-looking new publication dedicated to celebrating local and international talent in what they call “modern narrative” — illustrators are front and centre. The quarterly magazine, Vehicle, contains short fiction, serialized novels, graphic novels, illustrated poetry, narrative illustration and articles.

To celebrate the release of their second issue, they’re throwing a party at Art Central, which will feature live music by Lindsay Clinton, silent auctions on original and print artwork and a paper airplane flying contest.

The upstart has plenty to celebrate. Vehicle was nominated for a Joe Shuster Award for work in its first issue. The award celebrates the work of comic book creators, publishers and retailers. The magazine has also scored a distribution deal that will see the publication distributed in specialty stores in Europe and across North America.
