· Smallman, my new favourite punk label.

For a record label that started as a vanity project for its founders, Winnipeg’s Smallman Records has become a major player in the North American punk scene. While the label has helped bands like Moneen and Comeback Kid get U.S. exposure, they have also continued to develop great new talent. The label’s two newest releases are the proof.

As a side-project for Comeback Kid’s Andrew Newfield, Sights & Sounds is considerably poppier than his regular gig, but this new EP maintains an intensity that is sorely lacking in the pop-punk genre. Mixing give-and-take guitars with melodic keyboards and harmonies that push the limits of Newfield’s vocal range, Sights & Sounds write great pop songs without pussing out.

As one of Smallman’s few U.S. signings, Oregon trio Broadway Calls are a perfect fit with the label’s new artistic regime. A head-on collision between The Get Up Kids and Green Day, they sneer through muted guitar licks with the best of them. With brash choruses and rock-solid delivery, these guys are one hit single away from being the next Fall Out Boy, the difference being that you would never resent their success.
