PENTANGLE
The Time Has Come 1967-1973
Castle/Sanctuary

· It’s folk festival season.

Why does a four-disc box set like this exist? Why is this being reviewed in Fast Forward instead of Mojo? Yeah, there’s plenty of self-indulgent jamming to go ’round, but consider these salient facts. The British band from yesteryear boasted two kick-ass guitarists (John Renbourn and Bert Jansch) from whom Jimmy Page plundered many acoustic ideas. They had a killer rhythm section that allowed them to meld their British folk with pop and improv jazz jamming that pre-dated the births of many of today’s jam band adherents. Compare "Rain and Snow" from the disc of unreleased performances to anything in the Iron and Wine catalogue. Pentangle did it first. They win.
