THE GHOST IS DANCING
The Darkest Spark

· Last years critical fave demonstrates a more mature sound on first full-length release.
Last year, the Toronto-based six-piece The Ghost is Dancing garnering acclaim for their debut EP. With hopes high, January saw the band entering the recording studio, straddling a line somewhere between Arcade Fire and Neutral Milk Hotel, and emerging this spring with The Darkest Spark. While their self-titled EP careened joyously into outer space, this full-length remains somewhat more earthbound and serious. The wide-ranging Neutral Milk Hotel-inspired pop-caterwaul is all but gone, appearing only on "The Organ" and "We Make It". Instead, the six-piece sound has grown more focused; more guitar, less horns. Songs like "Greatlakescape" feature more angst, reminiscent of Les Savy Fav, and less wild ebullience, but are altogether better structured. This leaves another 2006 newcomer, Beirut, to corner the market on slaphappy haphazardry, though they do let loose and careen with near reckless abandon on "Wall of Snow."
