City arts organization making space
Re: "Spaced Out," by Adrian Morrow, City, June 14-20, 2007

Your article points out an important truth about the long-term success of the arts in Calgary. The best solutions to the issues affecting the arts, such as the space crunch, are going to come from the minds and hard work of Calgary’s innovative and entrepreneurial artists and organizations. That's why Calgary Arts Development is focused on creating a supportive and empowering environment for Calgary's artists. We know we've got a lot of work ahead, but I think your readers might be interested to know that two of our key team members featured prominently in two of the examples you cited in your article. Karen Ball, our director of community investment, was the executive director of ArtsHab in Edmonton from concept to completion. Holly Simon, community investment officer, was the director at TRUCK Gallery when CAMPER was founded.

Both Karen and Holly were responsible for generating the arts spaces research you reference in your article, and you're sure to run into them more as we begin the process of seriously addressing the space crunch. Read more about our research and strategy for arts spaces at www.calgaryartsdevelopment.com.
