METRIC
Grow Up and Blow Away
Last Gang
· The ghost of Metrics past.
On Grow Up and Blow Away, honesty is Metrics best weapon. The CDs insert describes this early incarnation of the band as "some kids with day jobs trying to work a drum machine," and its an apt description. Throughout Grow Up, there are a few glimpses of the supremely confident band that Metric would become, but far more of the nervous new band finding its way.
The album is unofficially the bands debut, recorded in 2001, but never saw proper release until now. Six years later, it predictably sounds almost nothing like the Metric weve come to know. There are very few changes of pace throughout the record, and its a bit of a drag to get through the whole thing. Highlights like "Hardwire" are too few and far between.
Grow Up and Blow Away is a great release for interests sake, but comparing Metric in 2001 to Metric in 2007 is ultimately unfair. At the very least, it will tide fans over until their new album comes out this fall.
