· Saskatoon’s Chainfire may have needed a stronger hand cutting the chaff.

While most of the world looks at Saskatchewan as little more than wheat fields and mineral spas, there is an aggression that is brewing under the surface. Ripping out of Saskatoon with a sound that blends the straightforward power of Motorhead with the fretboard athletics of Metallica and melodic sensibility of Stone Sour, Chainfire delivers its debut full-length, Details. A meaty affair, the album is hooky while featuring plenty of low-end chugging and throaty lyric delivery. This is clearly a band that is technically proficient and wears its influences like badges of honour. Still, the album does tend to meander. Cutting the chaff would make these epics leaner, meaner and more pointed. Similarly, the album could use stronger mastering so that the weight and barbs of tracks such as "Under Me" and "Hero for a Day" would be even more poignant. Still, with this much heart, Chainfire have a strong future once they grow into their own skin.
