| Social Venture Partners Calgary presents a special screening of Downtown Dawgs: The Road to the Homeless World Cup. This locally-produced documentary focuses on four men, their drop-in counsellor, and the opportunity of a lifetime making the Canadian National Team and competing for the homeless world cup in South Africa. The screening takes place on Saturday, June 9 at 3:30 p.m. at the Globe Cinema (617 8 Avenue S.W.) and will be followed by a panel discussion with the filmmakers, Downtown Dawgs players, and the executive director of the Calgary Drop-in and Rehab Centre. Advance tickets are available by calling 263-0079 and all proceeds will go towards the Downtown Dawgs Society.
The Arusha Centre, together with the Calgary Animated Objects Society and Movies That Matter, are bringing some fun social justice to town in the form of The Yes Men. These "globe-trotting activists" are known for such world-class pranks as swapping voice boxes in Barbie and GI Joe dolls and impersonating "big-time criminals" from powerful organizations like the WTO on international television. Smart, funny and creative, these fellows will present two hours of material including stories, performance and video from their latest stunts. The Yes Men event takes place on Friday, June 15 at 7 p.m. at the Plaza Theatre, (1133 Kensington Road N.W.). Calgary dollars are accepted. P.S. this event may contain some adult content, so it might be wise to leave the younger activists at home with a sitter and a copy of The Yes Men documentary!
