· Shocks of shocks! These astronomically overrated Vice/NME darlings have released a sophomore effort even more bland and derivative than their debut.
By now, everyone must be sick of the cheeky Monkeyss new single "Brianstorm," with its blockheaded dance-punk guitars, "ever-topical" lyrics about a "T-shirt and tie combination" and "R&B" video (barf). I must concede that the racing drums from the first 30 seconds are cool, but before long even they revert back to the same old worn out hi-hat and snare beat.
Alex Turner and company seem to be aiming for a more danceable sound this time around, with almost every single song going on and on and on at a ridiculously relentless pace while not really going anywhere at all. It takes four tracks of sub-Bravery shite before you get to the mid-tempo love song "Flourescent Adolescent" and the glacier-paced lounge number "Only Ones Who Know," but they sure arent any smarter.
On "The Bad Thing," Turner seems to be not quite bragging but clearly offering up the information that girls will cheat on their boyfriends with him. Unfortunately, its not an entertaining admission of the temptations of celebrity, like Mike Skinners undervalued lyrical turns of late. In the end, I think Alex says it best himself on "Do Me a Favour" "perhaps fuck off might be too kind."
