Books are great
In the summertime, the readings are fine
Sunny skies, green leaves, birdsong – it’s almost enough to make you want to stay downtown after 5:00 p.m. In fact, there’s a very dedicated bunch of folks at the Olympic Plaza Cultural District who are working to vitalize the core, and the latest fruit of their labours is Meet Me @ OP, a two-day extravaganza with a little bit of everything. You can try out bellydancing (or yoga or bocce ball or board games or...), join the circus, watch stone carvers at work, lounge at a tea party, check out a late-night screening of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and much more. Head downtown anytime between May 31 and June 1 to inject Calgary’s core with the vitality it deserves. Visit www.culturaldistrict.ca for more information.

Tom Wayman is a busy, busy man this week, with the launch of two brand-new books. He’ll be reading poetry from High Speed Through Shoaling Water and short stories from Boundary Country. You could be the first on your block with a signed copy of each! Join him at McNally Robinson on May 31, 7:00 p.m.

The four heirs to Celebre’s throne were taken hostage as infants to spare their kingdom from the wrath of the Bloodlord. Fifteen years later, they’ve reunited with the power of gods and a thirst for revenge. Dave Duncan presents Mother of Lies, a tale of epic fantasy and sibling rivalry, at McNally Robinson on June 1, 7:00 p.m.

Asian Heritage Month may be winding down, but the ImaginAsian Festival keeps on ticking! The Asian Night Market brings together food, vendors, storytellers, magicians, lanterns, fireworks and more in an epic celebration of Asian-Canadian culture. The market will be open on June 2 from 4:00 p.m. to midnight in Olympic Plaza.

It’s not easy to be an artist in cowboy country – but that hasn’t stopped them! In Alberta Art & Artists, Patricia Ainslie and Mary-Beth Laviolette trace the rich history of Albertan visual art through art schools, sketch clubs, galleries, artist-run centres and, of course, artists. Join them for a heritage-laden afternoon at McNally Robinson on June 4, noon.

Andrée Iffrig invites urbanites to adult storytime. In Find Your Voice at Work: The Power of Storytelling in the Workplace, she offers tools, tips and games that will allow for trust-building, open communication and motivation at the office. She’s at McNally Robinson on June 5, 5:00 p.m.

What’s a better relaxant for the frenetic urban professional than an evening of yoga? If you’re looking for an entry point into the world of mats and lululemon, look no further than Swami Sivananda Radha’s The Yoga of Healing. Faith Stuart of the Calgary Radha Yoga Centre offers a presentation on the book at McNally Robinson on June 6, 6:00 p.m.

Gravol! Butter tarts! Eh! Katherine Barber, editor-in-chief of Oxford’s Canadian Dictionary department, comes to Calgary this week with Only in Canada You Say, a book filled with made-in-Canada vocabulary. You can learn 17 different words for ice or three uniquely Canadian sex terms at the Central Library on June 6, 7:00 p.m.

If words aren’t your bag, you can head over to a different library to check out a slideshow by Neil Jennings. In Uncommon Beauty, Jennings explores the wildflowers and shrubs of the Rocky Mountains. He’s at the Alexander Calhoun Library on June 6, 7:00 p.m.

In 1835, Alexander Tilloch Galt came to Canada as a young clerk, but he quickly became one of the country’s most prominent and influential early politicians. In Stars Appearing: The Galts’ Vision of Canada, Jane Harris explores Canada’s early days and the pioneer spirit of its founders. She reads from her work at McNally Robinson on June 7, noon.

It’s flywheel time again. This month, Emily Cargan, Emily Elder, Tom Muir and Sharanpal Ruprai take to the stage for a rousing evening of poetry, prose and unpredictable literary excellence. Join us for wordplay and a pint or three at McNally Robinson on June 7, 7:30 p.m.
