THE CLIKS

· The latest in a long, long line of people copping to liking Justin Timberlake.
The Cliks have sure given us a lot to talk about. First, they include a cover of Justin Timberlakes "Cry Me a River" on their debut album, which actually kind of rocks. Then word slowly leaks out that lead singer Lucas Silveira was born biologically a woman and is now living as a transgender male.
On the one hand, there is probably far too much being made of both of those things. As for the former, covering JT would have been ballsy in, say, 2002, but by now everyone in the free world has admitted their love for him. As for the latter, well, the band is hardly using it for publicity, and it has nothing to do with the music.
On the other hand, however, it might not be such a bad thing to focus on these distractions and not the rest of this tepid collection of pseudo-cock-rock songs. The album starts promisingly enough with the uptempo "Complicated" (no, not an Avril Lavigne cover), but quickly blends together into same-y sounding riffs and awkward, angsty lyrics.
The Cliks know their way around a melody, and Silveira has a pitch-perfect voice for this kind of music. The tunes just lack a little personality.
