SOUTHERN CULTURE ON THE SKIDS
Countrypolitan Favorites
Yep Roc
· Southern Culture on the Skids puts its spin on T-Rex, Wanda Jackson and many more.
Southern Culture on the Skids (SCOTS) built a backwoods rep on a steady diet of up-tempo bang-and-twang, dirty surf rock and Little Debbie oatmeal pies. Despite mile-high beehive hairdos, vocals with a shameless drawl and a non-stop commitment to good times, SCOTS has the chops to go with the shtick. While most cover albums are a boring contract-filling exercise in self-indulgence, Countrypolitan Favorites stands up with the bands best albums
On 2004s Mojo Box, the bands sound verged on hi-fi and that continues here with simmering organs, big-wave reverb and two-part vocal harmonies. With these studio trappings at their disposal, SCOTS easily takes each song and makes it their own. Bassist Mary Huff has vocals that get better with every record, and on Countrypolitan Favorites she is as sultry as ever. Even a song as trite and syrupy as "Rose Garden" becomes AM Gold with her pipes in the mix. From the top of "Wolverton Mountain" to the heart of CCR territory, Countrypolitan Favorites cements this bands rep as the best party band ever.
