Theatre article earns grand gesture
Re: "Trouble at the GRAND," by Adrian Morrow, City, May 10-16, 2007.

I am troubled by the irresponsibility of the recent article on Theatre Junction at The GRAND. Fast Forward sent a summer journalism student, Adrian Morrow, who is attending Ryerson in Toronto, to give a "year in review" of Theatre Junction at The GRAND. I find it absurd that Fast Forward would send a student, living in Toronto, who has not seen any work at The GRAND this year to report on our program. I spent over an hour talking to Morrow, attempting to transmit my vision for The GRAND, our local, national and international presentations and creations, our music series and a variety of other activities that saw over 75,000 people through The GRAND this season. None of this was reported on. And some of what was reported on was misrepresented. We do not have financial "woes" and our "critical" reviews were mixed not "savaged." In fact, of our seven productions, five received excellent reviews. I believe that many of your readers would be more interested in what is actually happening in the theatre and our vision for supporting contemporary live art in Calgary, than the tabloid journalism of this article. Next time you send someone for an interview, I would appreciate a professional with some knowledge of and interest in reporting on our work. Otherwise, please don’t waste my time.

Mark Lawes,
Executive Artistic Director,
Theatre Junction at The GRAND
