PETER ELKAS
Wall of Fire
Maple Music

· Back in the day, Peter Elkas was in Montreal indie rock band Local Rabbits.

In the late ’90s, while Sloan was ripping off Queen and Thrush Hermit were filtering vintage punk rock through ’80s arena metal, Local Rabbits were tightening the screws on keyboard-heavy psych-blues. The former two bands have grown up or produced acclaimed solo artists. The Rabbits have not been so lucky. Front Peter Elkas is still in the game, but one listen to his sophomore album will make you wonder why.

Wall of Fire still sees him trading in blues has-beens, but instead of cribbing from John Lee Hooker, this album sounds like the worst of Eric Clapton’s recent catalogue. Shimmering white-boy blues laced with sensitive easy-listening vocals don’t make you want to get down and get it on. It makes you want to take it out and throw it away.
