The first time out, rock ’n’ roll two-piece Moaners had a bit of swampy charm on their side. They made up for their obvious shortcomings with a gutsy attack and raw power. On Blackwing Yalobusha they have no such luck. These girls simply lack the chops and the energy to pull this album off. It’s easy to liken this pair to a poor-woman’s version of The Gossip – they both deal in bluesy attitude, dead-simple riffs and ballsy female vocals – but if you want The Gossip, just get The Gossip. Moaners aren’t even a poor substitute.
