· Rolling Stone-anointed best neo-punk post-anti-rock band gains momentum with latest EP.
Opening with the stridently poppy Strokes-oriented melodies of the title track, "Box," Newmarket, Ontarios Tokyo Police Club has released a new EP designed to build on its recent performance at SXSW. An infectious bassline and energetic guitarwork offer brief contrasts to the weary vocals of Dave Monks, existing somewhere between John K. Sampson and Julian Casablancas. "Cut Cut Paste" explodes in a burst of distortion and fuzz, accelerating at breakneck speed, clocking in at under two minutes. Its breathtaking choruses (bop-bop-bah!) fade into the piano melancholy of "A Lesson In Crime." The latter is the only "new" track here as live versions of the other songs were released earlier this year.
