THE PONYS
Turn the Lights Out

Clearly The Ponys are in love with music and theres no stronger indication than the cleverly crafted homage that is their third release, Turn The Lights Out. The album opens with the 1960s pop strains of "Double Vision" a jangly, yet oddly muscular riff. The song is inspired by such power groups as Them, before descending into early-90s grunge territory with "Everyday Weapon" (a track that is very reminiscent of Superfuzz-era Mudhoney). Both "1209 Seminary" and "Small Talk" bury the band under layers of guitar sound a la My Bloody Valentine, while "Shine" and "Kingdom of Hearts" feel like a trip through the Jesus and Mary Chains Psychocandy. At no time, however, do you get the indication that The Ponys are content merely aping their heroes. Instead, theres a sense of sheer revelry as the band shifts from one style to another, moving from strength to strength in a carnival of musical celebration.
