| Last months $100 Film Festival, presented by the Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers, was a big success. Award categories included Best of Alberta, Best Super 8, Best 16 MM, Jury Award and Audience Favourite. And the winners were Hans Olson for his charming short Bronwens Ark, Mike Maryniuk for the surreal Fish Arms, John Driftmier, Christina Takahashi and Evan Warner for Averys Gnome, Anu Jindal for the super-funny Breakfast in America and the amazing, environmental stop-motion romp Photosynthesis by J. Scott Portingale.
The Central Branch of the Calgary Public Library continues the Thursday Afternoon at the Movies series in conjunction with Casablanca Video, every Thursday at 1 p.m. This months features are Lost in America, The Third Man, Where the Boys Are and 42nd Street. As it turns out, girls just wanna make films! The herland film & video festival is gearing up for its 2007 lineup that will run May 1 through 6 at the Plaza Theatre in Kensington. Feel like taking a road trip? The Film and Video Arts Society Alberta (FAVA) presents Tale Slate: A FAVE FEATURES RETROSPECTIVE, on Sunday, May 6, at the Metro Cinema in Edmonton. Films include The Road Taken, Chronotope, City of Champions and Purple Toast, a feature from Calgary filmmaker and former head of the CSIF, Brent Speiss. Attention youth!! The Youth Media Advisory Group (YMAG) is holding the "I just want to say something" contest. The goal is to create an ad that will change perceptions about youth, break down stereotypes and show who youth really are. The ad can take any form, with film/video being one option. If you are under 25 and can submit your ad by May 15, 2007 go ahead, just say something! |
