Myth Takes

· Check check check, !!! are in the house.
New York funk punks !!! (pronounced chk chk chk, or any series of single syllable sounds) have never been a band that take themselves too seriously. To provide an example, the song "Pardon My Freedom" from their last long-player (2004s uneven but occasionally excellent Louden Up Now) includes the lyrics "you can tell the President to suck my fucking dick/ does that sound intelligent? Like I give a fucking frick."
Nonetheless, underneath singer Nic Offers ridiculous ramblings there exist some of the most impressive danceable grooves in recent memory. This trend continues on Myth Takes, with more cohesive results overall, but nothing that will make it a classic.
The title track opens the album on a strong note with a dark, bouncing rhythm, surf-rock guitars and some seductive whispers from Offer. From here, "All My Heroes are Weirdos" and "Must Be the Moon" both come as one-trick joke tracks, although the latter does contain a pretty righteous disco beat.
"Heart of Hearts" is probably going to be the hit from the record with its sweltering synths and catchy chorus, but the actual highlights are the string-flourished street hassle "Yadnus" and the elastic eight-minute banger "Bend Over Beethoven." Minus the momentum-killing closer "Infinifold," Myth Takes is a solid effort and will burn up its fair share of dance floors as the year goes on.
