EATING OUT 2: SLOPPY SECONDS
STARRING Jim Verraros, Emily Brooke Hands and Marco Dapper
DIRECTED BY Phillip J. Bartell
Monday, April 2
Engineered Air Theatre (Epcor Centre)

There is a very easy way to tell whether or not you are going to enjoy Eating Out 2: Sloppy Seconds (EA2). If you think that the title is a clever sexual innuendo, rife with subtlety and a knowing wink, then by all means, watch this movie. If you think it’s an immature appeal to the lowest common denominator, then for the love of God, run.

EA2 makes no apologies for what it is. And what it is is a raunchy, pun-filled romp, in which every character is sex-crazed to the point of ridiculous satire. Every male character in the film is gay, whether they be repressed, closeted or out and proud. None of the girls in the film are the objects of desire, but rather spend their time chasing boys who are… also chasing boys.

The film boils down to Kyle (Jim Verraros) and Marc (Brett Chukerman), two openly gay men, competing to get the first hook-up with the closeted Troy (Marco Dapper). The fact that writer and director Phillip J. Bartell couldn’t even be bothered to give his characters last names says a lot about where his priorities were.

Eating Out 2 could have had a point. If Bartell had decided to play it, ahem, straight, the movie could have been a real romantic comedy. It could’ve shown that a relationship between two men isn’t necessarily all that different than one between a man and a woman. Unfortunately, Bartell turns the films into little more than soft-core porn and doesn’t explore emotional depth past the waistline.

There are some snappy one-liners and, if nothing else, the film is a good test of maturity levels when it comes to cheap sex jokes. But for the most part, Eating Out 2 can be considered a missed opportunity.

Eating Out: Sloppy Seconds is a one-night screening put on by the Fairy Tales International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival. There will be two screenings (7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.) on Monday, April 2 at the Engineered Air Theatre (Epcor Centre). There will also be a screening of the short film Crush directed by Phillip J. Bartell as well.
