NINE INCH NAILS
Beside You in Time
Island
· Just when you think youre out, Trent Reznor and his leather pants pull you back in.
Though Nine Inch Nails (NIN) and I have drifted apart in recent years, I was a huge fan at the height of their Downward Spiral days. Yes, I still buy the albums, but that spark is gone from the relationship, or so I thought. With the new live DVD, Beside You in Time, that old flame is burning once more.
Trent Reznor is a bit fatter and balder than when we last met, and the band has all changed, but the force that used to drive the music is back. While this group is more serious and grown up than the band that caked itself in mud and destroyed the stage at the second Woodstock, this is certainly a fond memory of those days.
Shot during the 2006 tour, the DVD features 27 live performances that cover the entire NIN discography from "Head Like a Hole to Only." Unfortunately, some favourites such as "Happiness in Slavery" are absent, but there are nice surprises like "Burn," from the Natural Born Killers soundtrack.
The camera angles give you the intimate feel of watching the show from the audience, and the interesting sets such as the giant screen on "Right Where it Belongs" break up the monotony that is often felt when watching concert DVDs.
Now if youll excuse me, NIN and I have some catching up to do.
