Multidisciplinary madness
Last September, some Edmonton musician friends of Laurie Fuhr asked her to set up a Calgary show. She searched for local acts to join the bill and found more than she bargained for – a whole crowd of musicians and poets, theatre and film artists. When her Edmonton friends ultimately cancelled their trip, the event had already gained unstoppable momentum, and the Calgary MultiArts Variety Show was born.

Now, Fuhr has put together a second evening of multidisciplinary madness. In the spirit of the first event, the Calgary MultiArts Variety Show #2 features music (Juanita Brandt, Naomi Burkhart, Disposable Cars, Kris Ellestad, Aaron Leaney, The Pine Tarts and Russian Artist Factory), poetry (Leif Baradoy, Möe Clark, ryan fitzpatrick, Hugh Thomas and Sheri-D Wilson), theatre by the Swallow-a-Bicycle Performance Cooperative (featuring me, Mat Mailandt, Charles Netto and Shawna O’Connell) and films by Garth Whelan.

Fuhr promises "an exciting, fast-paced night" of artistic excellence on March 24 at 7:00 p.m., at The Soda. Tickets are $8, proceeds going to the performers and Inn from the Cold.

There’s a pair of double-headers at Pages Books this week. First, Shaena Lambert and Jannie Edwards launch their new books, Radiance and Blood Opera: The Raven Tango Poems, in an evening of McCarthyism and mythology, on March 22 at 7:30 p.m. Then, on March 23 at 7:30 p.m., Carol Malyon launches Cathedral Woman, joined by local poet Barb Scott.

AlphaSoup, the University of Calgary’s poetry club, presents Spectacle & Bazaar, a collage of music, poetry and performance art, on March 22 at 7:00 p.m., in That Empty Space.

The English Literature Students’ Society presents the third annual Creative Writing Faculty Reading, featuring an evening of heavyweight writers – Christian Bök, Robert Majzels, Clem Martini, Suzette Mayr, Jaspreet Singh and Aritha van Herk – complete with free food and a prize raffle. This not-to-be-missed free event is on March 23 at 7:00 p.m., in Cassio A (MacEwan Hall, U of C).

The poetry-infused art series Thought Express returns with more unpredictable genre-bending mayhem! Hosted by Sabo, the latest instalment takes place on March 28 at 8:00 p.m., at Victoria’s Restaurant with a $10 cover charge. (If you visit www.myspace.com/thoughtexpress, you may find a ticket that’ll get you in for $5.)

Finally, it seems I made a flub a few weeks ago and improperly credited a couple of winners of the CBC Literary Awards. Sorry about that, Kelly Norah Drukker and Hugo Dubreuil.
