EXPLOSIONS IN THE SKY
All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone
Sonic Unyon

· Let your guitar do the talking.

With the ability to convey a thousand sentiments in a single whisper, Explosions in the Sky has managed to capture a symphonic scream with a pluck of a guitar string. The Texas instrumentalists have always managed to live up to their name and have been revered in the trinity of the post-rock genre (along with Canadian bands such as Do Make Say Think and God Speed! You Black Emperor). However, their latest album, All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone, fails to engage the listener’s emotions. The quiet lulls and massive swells feel forced and are missing any semblance of tension that previous releases have done so well. This is by no means a terrible album, it just seems as if the magic and passion of Explosions’ past has been dulled, and what you’re left with is a beautiful, if hollow sounding release. Not a masterpiece as much as an exercise in crescendos – the spark is still there, but it’s smouldering.
