Hifi Club

King Britt creates music for those spaces between fucking. Tucked in the small of the back aglow with tadpoles of broken light. Between curved arms turned to the ceiling and every layer of reality above. The momentary disconnect between two bodies excusing themselves for more liquor to give their pelvic bones a respite. Named after the King James Bible by his grandmother (King Britt is his legal name), the former DJ for jazz-rap innovators Digable Planets, has long been in demand to fill those spaces. He scored Miami Vice and has been that presence you can’t quite name from a multitude of commercials.

In support of his latest compilation, Deep and Sexy 4, King Britt will bring his urgent and sensual brand of electronic music to Calgary’s Hifi Club for those in need of sexy grooves. King Britt sat down with Fast Forward to discuss his philosophies on spinning and not talk about drug use.

Fast Forward: You’ve just mixed the latest in the Deep and Sexy series. What definition of sexy were you working off?

King Britt: Sexy could be something physical like your eyes or the way you move. It’s a sort of subconscious charisma that draws people to you. I enhance that through my music. The way I spin is very sensual. That’s just how I am. My personality comes out in the way I DJ.

FFWD: You build your albums around narratives. Do you take that same approach when spinning a club?

King Britt: The other day I was spinning for my record release party at the Love club in New York. I brought all these songs related to love, so I could spontaneously put together this love story. That’s kind of geeky. Only certain people would really pick up on all the lyrics being about love. Still, you get that feeling when you’re in the club of ‘Oh shit, this is a love story.’ That’s what I try to do.

FFWD: Do you still go out clubbing?

King Britt: I go to more live shows. I try to stay away from dance clubs when I’m not working unless Francois Kevorkian is spinning, or DJ Spinna or DJ Rich Medina. Those guys take me on a journey.

FFWD: What journey is that?

King Britt: People want to hear certain things, but as a DJ you have to educate and take them on this trip. You got to not just play records, but get them to be like ‘Wow we went somewhere.’ When you get there, you forget about everything. I’m a dancer, so I can close my eyes and feel the music. It’s kind of like an out of body experience in a way. Just like, ‘Wow this music is taking me somewhere.’ I don’t know where it is, but it’s definitely out of this realm, you know what I mean? It’s hard to explain, you just got to experience it. Go hear Francois play, it’s really intergalactic, man.

FFWD: In the past, you’ve talked about a mushroom trip that’s changed your sound.

King Britt: I rather not, because a lot of… I’ve been getting a lot of questions about that lately. It was a good trip and it opened another channel mentally for me to do music. I don’t know. My whole sound changed after that. There’s a certain freedom that goes with psychedelics, let’s just leave it at that. I don’t want to be at the border in Canada and have somebody read this.
