March is set to be a fierce month for local film
Attention all budget conscious citizens! The Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers 15th Annual $100 Film Festival runs from Thursday, March 8 to Saturday March 10 at the Plaza Theatre in Kensington (1133 Kensington Road N.W.). The goal, produce a fascinating work of cinematic art on either 16 mm or Super 8 film under 22 minutes long. It must cost a lot more than $100 to produce an eligible film, but the name is so catchy, and 15 years strong, changing it to something more reflective of the actual budget would be silly. This year’s festival features 36 films, live musical performances from Woodpigeon, The Brenda Vaqueros and Wade, and an awards ceremony. For tickets and more information, visit csif.org or stop by either Casablanca Video location in Mission or Marda Loop.

Another March festival, not quite as old as the aforementioned $100 is the 2nd Annual Calgary Pan Asian Film Festival, March 16 to 18 at the Globe Cinema (617 8th Avenue S.W.). It is somewhat connected to the March 21 campaign, which is the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The program includes shorts, features, documentaries and experimental films from countries including Vietnam, the Philippines, South Korea, China and South Asia. For a complete schedule, visit www.cpacs.ca.

The Central Branch of the Calgary Public Library, together with Casablanca Video, presents Thursday Afternoon at the Movies throughout March and April. I can’t think of a better way to spend a lazy afternoon than with classic titles like The Third Man, The Magnificent Ambersons and 42nd Street. Screenings begin at 1 p.m. sharp at the John Dutton Theatre (616 MacLeod Trail S.E.).

Another ongoing film series is hosted by the Glenbow Museum every Tuesday at noon. A great excuse for an extended lunch hour, the Mavericks series looks at some "reel" rebels by examining Mounties, mapmakers and mountaineers. Admission is included in your entrance to the Glenbow. Visit www.glenbow.org for more information.
