LISA GERRARD
The Best of Lisa Gerrard
4AD

· A retrospective listen to an otherworldly career and voice.

With a career that spans over two decades, as part of the group Dead Can Dance, scoring innumerable film soundtracks and acclaimed solo and collaborative albums, it is no wonder Lisa Gerrard finally decided to compile the best of her vast body of work into one "best of" album.

Gerrard’s otherworldly voice is a familiar one to movie audiences that will have undoubtedly heard her voice and scores in some of Hollywood’s biggest films such as Gladiator, Ali, Black Hawk Down and Whale Rider. The album fully displays her incredibly voluminous and lush orchestral scores backing up her often haunting, sometimes ethereal vocals. Including tracks from her solo album The Mirror Pool, and collaborations with her Dead Can Dance partner Brendan Perry, the album shows great insight into her musical oeuvre.

Often borrowing unique cultural elements for her scores, the album is a world music buffet featuring bouzouki, tablas and camel drums, as well as electronic beats and symphonic back-up. Her voice is an instrument unto itself and is masterfully used and manipulated. Gerrard’s music is moving, complex, incredibly well-crafted and her talents undeniable, even if you aren’t a world music fan.
