THE HOLMES BROTHERS
State of Grace
Alligator Records

· Soul brothers do a wide range of cover tunes and achieve a State of Grace.

"We gotta think about the kids," croons Wendell Holmes. Amen to that. Think about the kids. Make them listen to this CD. It’s for their own good, and they’ll thank you for it in the long run. Maybe not today. Maybe even not tomorrow. But soon. The Holmes Brothers (Wendell, Sherman and Popsy Dixon) have to be the best soul artists making music today. Their harmonies are spot on, the arrangements sublime and their musical range immense. Nobody else could cover songwriters such as John Fogerty, Nick Lowe, Hank Williams and Lyle Lovett and bring to each song a freshness that is exhilarating and which grabs you and won’t let go. The biggest stretch has to be a slow, almost hymn-like version of Rick Nielsen’s "I want you to want me." The song is hardly recognizable,,yet strangely comforting. Add to that several original tunes and a supporting cast that includes Rosanne Cash and Levon Helm and this is a CD that truly attains a state of grace.
