· A cinematic blues primer.

These days, most soundtracks are nothing more than a string of soon-to-be hits lacking any cohesion used to market a flaccid bit of pop filmmaking. Not so with the companion album to Craig Brewer’s latest flick Black Snake Moan. A collection of vintage blues acts such as Son House, R.L. Burnside and Jessie Mae Hemphill stacked against modern indie specialists like The Black Keys and The North Mississippi All-Stars, the album plays with a dark and wincing longing to balance its soulful 12-bar grooves.

Sam Jackson stars as a has-been blues player in the film and lends his voice to four tracks on the album. True, the guy ain’t much of a singer, but when he delivers a monologue about killing motherfuckers while the band backs him with hypnotic riffs and searing slide work there is no question – you got the blues.
