BENNY BENASSI
Cooking for Pump-Kin: Special Menu
Universal

· Italian DJ’s meat-ballsy first album launches new record label.

Every now and then it’s nice to take a step back from whatever it is you usually listen to and just put on a solid party album. Cooking For Pump-Kin: Special Menu is just that. Italian DJ Benny Benassi manages to bring dance-hall energy to the first album from his new Pump-Kin record label.

More a collection of deconstructions than of re-mixes, these 16 tracks provide a sample of the kinds of cuts that were featured on Benassi’s recent bus tour through dark, sweaty Canadian clubs. Best known for his leg-warmer dance hit Satisfaction, Benassi displays his signature style with versions of everything from Moby, to Depeche Mode to Sharam’s Eddie Murphy homage PATT (Party All The Time).

A little overwhelming at times, Benassi takes aim at the hardcore dance crowd, never skimping on the throbbing bass, Nintendo bleeps and fuzzed-out rhythms. This may not be something to throw on the Discman between classes or listen to alone on a rainy day, but it certainly will put the craziness of a solid DJ performance in the palm of your hand, just close your eyes and you can smell the sweat and see the glow sticks.
